Psalm 126

Like Those Who Dreamed

When God brought back the exiles from captivity, it felt like a dream! Their mouths were filled with laughter. But some people are still waiting for restoration — the psalm says they are like farmers planting seeds with tears, who will harvest with singing and joy.

  1. 1When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed.
  2. 2Our mouths were filled with laughter and our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them."
  3. 3The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.
  4. 4Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the Negev.
  5. 5Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.
  6. 6He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.

What it means

When God brought His people home it felt so good they could hardly believe it was real — they laughed like people in a dream. But the psalm is honest that some are still waiting, planting seeds with tears. Both are in here: the joy, and the waiting for it.

A little prayer

God, thank You for the times of laughing and good news. When I am still waiting and it is hard, help me keep planting anyway, trusting that You bring the harvest. Amen.

Memory verse

Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.

Psalm 126:5 (BSB)

It promises that the crying and the harvest belong to the same field.
