Psalm 65

God Provides for Creation

This is a beautiful harvest psalm! God answers prayer and takes away our guilt. He makes the rivers run, the mountains stand firm, and the fields grow food. The meadows and valleys shout for joy and sing when the harvest comes in.

  1. 1Praise awaits You, O God, in Zion; to You our vows will be fulfilled.
  2. 2O You who hear prayer, to You all flesh will come.
  3. 3When our sins overwhelm us, You forgive our transgressions.
  4. 4Blessed is the one You choose and bring near to live in Your courts. We are satisfied with the goodness of Your house and Your holy temple.
  5. 5You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness, O God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas,
  6. 6who formed the mountains by Your power, having armed Yourself with strength,
  7. 7who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations.
  8. 8The whole earth is awed by Your signs; where morning dawns and evening fades, You call forth songs of joy.
  9. 9You care for the land and water it; You enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so You have ordained it.
  10. 10You drench its furrows and level its ridges; You soften it with showers and bless its crops.
  11. 11You crown the year with Your bounty, and Your cart overflows with abundance.
  12. 12The grasslands of the wilderness overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness.
  13. 13The meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they shout for joy and sing.

What it means

This is a harvest song. The same God who forgives our wrongs also fills the rivers, holds the mountains steady and makes the fields grow food. The valleys are pictured shouting for joy. Creation is not silent about God — and when we notice it, we get to join in.

A little prayer

God, thank You for rivers and mountains and fields full of food. Thank You that You forgive me and that You feed the whole world. I want to shout for joy along with the meadows and the valleys. Amen.
