Psalm 20

A Prayer for Victory

This psalm is a prayer for the king before a big battle. The people ask God to help and protect their leader. The most important lesson is that real strength doesn't come from horses or armies — it comes from trusting in God!

  1. 1May the LORD answer you in your day of trouble; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
  2. 2May He send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.
  3. 3May He remember all your offerings and regard your burnt offerings with favor.
  4. 4May He grant you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
  5. 5We will shout for joy at your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the LORD fulfill all your requests.
  6. 6Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He answers him from His holy heaven with the saving power of His right hand.
  7. 7Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
  8. 8They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand firm.
  9. 9O LORD, save the king! Answer us when we call!

What it means

When we face something hard, it's tempting to trust in our own strength, money, or cleverness — our 'chariots and horses.' But real confidence comes from trusting in God's name. He answers those who call on Him.

A little prayer

Lord, when I face hard things, help me not to trust in my own strength but in Your name. You answer when I call. Be my confidence and my victory today. Amen.
