Psalm 33

Praise to the Creator

This psalm calls everyone to sing a brand new song to God! God spoke and created the whole world with just His words. His plans never fail and His love never ends. People who trust in Him are truly happy.

  1. 1Sing for joy in the LORD, O you righteous; praise is fitting for the upright.
  2. 2Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to Him on the ten-stringed lyre.
  3. 3Sing a new song to Him; play skillfully with a shout of joy.
  4. 4For the word of the LORD is upright, and all His work is trustworthy.
  5. 5He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the LORD's loving devotion.
  6. 6By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of His mouth.
  7. 7He gathers the waters of the sea into a heap; He puts the depths into storehouses.
  8. 8Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.
  9. 9For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.
  10. 10The LORD frustrates the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
  11. 11But the counsel of the LORD stands forever, the purposes of His heart to all generations.
  12. 12Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He chose as His inheritance.
  13. 13From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind;
  14. 14from His dwelling place He watches all who live on earth—
  15. 15He who fashions the hearts of all and considers everything they do.
  16. 16No king is saved by the size of his army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
  17. 17A horse is a vain hope for salvation; despite all its great strength, it cannot save.
  18. 18But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His loving devotion,
  19. 19to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine.
  20. 20We wait in hope for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.
  21. 21For our heart rejoices in Him, because we trust in His holy name.
  22. 22May Your loving devotion rest on us, O LORD, as we put our hope in You.

What it means

God spoke, and the whole world came to be. His word is always right and true, and His plans last forever. So it makes sense to put our hope in His unfailing love.

A little prayer

Lord, You spoke and the whole world was made! Your word is always true. I put my hope in You — let Your unfailing love rest on me. Amen.

Memory verse

May Your loving devotion rest on us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in You.

Psalm 33:22 (BSB)

It is the reason a psalm about a huge God ends up being comforting rather than frightening.

Talk about it

Questions with no single right answer — for a family table or a Sunday-school circle.

  1. The psalm says God made everything just by speaking. What is the most powerful thing words have ever done to you?
  2. It says God's plans stand firm for ever, while people's plans come and go. What are you planning at the moment?
  3. The psalm asks for a *new* song. Why new?
  4. What would you put in a new song about God?

Try this

Made by speaking

One person describes an imaginary place in as much detail as they can while everyone else draws it from the description alone. Compare the drawings. Then read verses 6 and 9.
