Psalm 8
God's Glory and Human Dignity
Look up at the night sky full of stars — who made all of that? God did! And amazingly, even though God made the whole universe, He cares deeply about each one of us. He gave humans an important job: to take care of His beautiful world.
- 1O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens.
- 2From the lips of children and infants You have ordained praise on account of Your adversaries, to silence the enemy and avenger.
- 3When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place—
- 4what is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You care for him?
- 5You have made him a little lower than the angels and crowned him with glory and honor.
- 6You made him ruler over the works of Your hands; You placed everything under his feet:
- 7all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field,
- 8the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
- 9O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!
What it means
When you look at the stars on a clear night, the mountains, or the ocean, it is easy to feel small. Yet God knows you by name and gave you a special place in His creation. You matter to Him more than you know.
A little prayer
O Lord, how amazing You are! When I look at the sky and the stars, I am amazed that You care about me. Thank You for making me and giving me a special place in Your world. Amen.
