Psalm 8

God's Glory and Human Dignity

Look up at the night sky full of stars — who made all of that? God did! And amazingly, even though God made the whole universe, He cares deeply about each one of us. He gave humans an important job: to take care of His beautiful world.

  1. 1O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens.
  2. 2From the lips of children and infants You have ordained praise on account of Your adversaries, to silence the enemy and avenger.
  3. 3When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place—
  4. 4what is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You care for him?
  5. 5You have made him a little lower than the angels and crowned him with glory and honor.
  6. 6You made him ruler over the works of Your hands; You placed everything under his feet:
  7. 7all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field,
  8. 8the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
  9. 9O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!

What it means

When you look at the stars on a clear night, the mountains, or the ocean, it is easy to feel small. Yet God knows you by name and gave you a special place in His creation. You matter to Him more than you know.

A little prayer

O Lord, how amazing You are! When I look at the sky and the stars, I am amazed that You care about me. Thank You for making me and giving me a special place in Your world. Amen.
