Psalm 107
Give Thanks to the LORD
This psalm tells four stories of people who were in trouble — lost in the desert, locked in prison, sick, and caught in a storm at sea. In every case they cried out to God and He saved them! The response is always: give thanks to the LORD for His amazing love.
- 1Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever.
- 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so—those He redeemed from the hand of the foe,
- 3those He gathered from the lands, from the east and the west, from the north and the south.
- 4Some wandered in the desert wasteland, finding no way to a city where they could settle.
- 5They were hungry and thirsty; their souls grew faint within them.
- 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.
- 7He led them on a straight path to a city where they could settle.
- 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
- 9For He has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things.
- 10Some sat in darkness and the shadow of death, prisoners in iron chains of affliction,
- 11for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
- 12So He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled and no one helped them up.
- 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
- 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke their chains apart.
- 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
- 16For He has shattered the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars.
- 17Fools were afflicted because of their rebellious ways and their iniquities.
- 18They loathed all kinds of food and drew near to the gates of death.
- 19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
- 20He sent His word and healed them; He rescued them from the pit.
- 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
- 22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce His works with joyful singing.
- 23Those who go down to the sea in ships, who conduct business on the great waters—
- 24they have seen the works of the LORD, His wonders on the deep.
- 25For He spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted up the waves of the sea.
- 26They rose to the sky; they descended to the depths. Their courage melted away in their peril.
- 27They reeled and staggered like drunken men, and all their skill was swallowed up.
- 28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.
- 29He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
- 30They rejoiced when the waters grew quiet, and He guided them to their desired haven.
- 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
- 32Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders.
- 33He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,
- 34and fruitful land into salty wasteland, because of the wickedness of those who dwell there.
- 35He turns a desert into a pool of water and dry land into flowing springs.
- 36There He brings the hungry to dwell, and they build a city to inhabit.
- 37They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.
- 38He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their herds diminish.
- 39Yet they decrease and are brought low through oppression, calamity, and sorrow.
- 40He pours contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.
- 41But He lifts the needy out of their affliction and multiplies their families like flocks.
- 42The upright see it and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.
- 43Whoever is wise will observe these things and ponder the loving devotion of the LORD.
