Psalm 107

Give Thanks to the LORD

This psalm tells four stories of people who were in trouble — lost in the desert, locked in prison, sick, and caught in a storm at sea. In every case they cried out to God and He saved them! The response is always: give thanks to the LORD for His amazing love.

¹Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever.
²Let the redeemed of the LORD say so—those He redeemed from the hand of the foe,
³those He gathered from the lands, from the east and the west, from the north and the south.
⁴Some wandered in the desert wasteland, finding no way to a city where they could settle.
⁵They were hungry and thirsty; their souls grew faint within them.
⁶Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.
⁷He led them on a straight path to a city where they could settle.
⁸Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
⁹For He has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things.
¹⁰Some sat in darkness and the shadow of death, prisoners in iron chains of affliction,
¹¹for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
¹²So He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled and no one helped them up.
¹³Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
¹⁴He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke their chains apart.
¹⁵Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
¹⁶For He has shattered the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars.
¹⁷Fools were afflicted because of their rebellious ways and their iniquities.
¹⁸They loathed all kinds of food and drew near to the gates of death.
¹⁹Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
²⁰He sent His word and healed them; He rescued them from the pit.
²¹Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
²²Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce His works with joyful singing.
²³Those who go down to the sea in ships, who conduct business on the great waters—
²⁴they have seen the works of the LORD, His wonders on the deep.
²⁵For He spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted up the waves of the sea.
²⁶They rose to the sky; they descended to the depths. Their courage melted away in their peril.
²⁷They reeled and staggered like drunken men, and all their skill was swallowed up.
²⁸Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.
²⁹He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
³⁰They rejoiced when the waters grew quiet, and He guided them to their desired haven.
³¹Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
³²Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders.
³³He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,
³⁴and fruitful land into salty wasteland, because of the wickedness of those who dwell there.
³⁵He turns a desert into a pool of water and dry land into flowing springs.
³⁶There He brings the hungry to dwell, and they build a city to inhabit.
³⁷They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.
³⁸He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their herds diminish.
³⁹Yet they decrease and are brought low through oppression, calamity, and sorrow.
⁴⁰He pours contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.
⁴¹But He lifts the needy out of their affliction and multiplies their families like flocks.
⁴²The upright see it and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.
⁴³Whoever is wise will observe these things and ponder the loving devotion of the LORD.
