Psalm 61

Lead Me to the Rock

From the ends of the earth, David cries out to God. He feels overwhelmed — like he's in water too deep to stand in — and asks God to lead him to a Rock that is higher than he is. God is that Rock — always solid and safe.

  1. 1Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.
  2. 2From the ends of the earth I call to You; I call as my heart grows faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
  3. 3For You have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.
  4. 4Let me dwell in Your tent forever; let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings.
  5. 5For You, O God, have heard my vows; You have given me the inheritance of those who fear Your name.
  6. 6Add days to the king's life; let his years extend through many generations.
  7. 7May he reign before God forever; appoint Your loving devotion and faithfulness to guard him.
  8. 8Then I will ever sing praises to Your name and fulfill my vows day after day.

What it means

David felt like he was standing in water too deep for his feet to touch the bottom. So he asked God to lead him to a rock higher than himself. When a problem is bigger than you are, you need something bigger than you are to stand on — and God is that rock.

A little prayer

God, sometimes a problem is too big for me and I can't feel the bottom. Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I am. Thank You that You are strong and steady when I am not. Amen.
